average易错与易混用法详解
1.用作名词，有两个主要意思：
(1) 表示“平均”“平均数”。如：
It’s said that the paper receive an average of nearly 100 articles a day. 据说这个报社平均每天要收到百来篇来稿。
比较“an average+of+复形名词”与“the average+of+复形名词”：前者表复数意义，后者表单数意义。如：
An average of 10 students are absent each day. 平均每天有10个学生缺席。
The average of letters received each month is 3,000. 每月平均收到信件3,000封。
(2) 表示“普通”“标准”“平常”。如：
These marks are well above (below) average. 这些分数远在平均分数之上（下）。
(3) 用于 on average, on an [the] average, 意为“平均起来”“在一般情况下”。如：
On (the) average he works eight hours a day. 他平均每工作8小时。
He smokes 20 cigarettes a day on an average. 他平均每天要抽20支烟。
2.用作形容词，也有两个主要意思：
(1) 表示“平均的”，通常只用作定语。如：
The average age of the students is 20. 学生的平均年龄为20岁。
(2) 表示“一般的”“普通的”，可用作定语也可用作表语。如：
It is just an average dictionary. 那只是本普通的词典。

3.用作动词，意为“平均有”“平均为”。如：
He averages two trips a year. 他平均每年旅游两次。
The children average 10 years of age. 这些小孩平均年龄为10岁。
We average eight hours’ work a day. 我们平均每天工作8小时。
The rainfall averages 36 inches a year. 年降雨量平均为36英寸。
