delay的用法与语法

1.用作动词时，表示推迟做某事，其后通常接动名词作宾语，但一般不接不定式。如：

Why have they delayed answering our letter? 他们为什么迟迟不回我们的信?

I think we should delay deciding about this until next year. 我想我们应该延迟到明年再来决定此事。

有时动名词前可以有自己的逻辑主语。如：

He delayed my calling the police. 我延误了我叫警察。

偶尔也可见到在delay后接不定式作宾语的例子，但很不普通，且有不少语法学家反对此用法。使用时需谨慎。如：

I have to delay to answer his letter. 我不得不推迟给他回信。

2.用作名词，表示“耽误”“延期”等，可用作可数或不可数名词。如：

We must leave without delay. 我们必须马上离开。

There was a delay of two hours before the plane took off. 飞机起飞推迟了两小时。

要表示推迟做某事或表示对做某事的延误，名词delay后通常接in doing sth，一般不能接of doing sth或to do sth。如：

Excuse me for my delay in answering your letter. 迟复为歉。

My delay in going abroad is due to my illness. 我推迟出国是由于我生病了。
